Own Our Story and Embrace Them
The more we run away from our stories and deny them, the
more they consume us. Eventually, they define us. However, when we own our
stories and embrace them, we get to write a magnificent and bold finale.
Our story is not a giant monster devouring us. It is us. And yes, in one lifetime, we will need to own a million heartbreaking stories of resistance, stereotypes, biases, defensiveness, prejudices and mind-sets. We will need to make millions of changes. We will have millions of hard-hitting conversations and confrontations.
I’ve learned that writing a magnificent and bold finale in our
personal lives may not necessarily mean that we smooth over hurt feelings in
our families and life. Often the hurt and pain we keep bottled within turn into
rage, resentment, and isolation. That is why we must talk about it. Even when
we don’t want to; even when we’re feeling weak and tired.
When we own our stories and embrace them we begin to stand
in our truth. It’s transformative in our personal and professional lives. Sometimes,
it can also be beneficial to our community lives.
We all have our own story of pain; usually rooted from our
own resistance, stereotypes, biases, defensiveness, prejudices and mind-set.
Eventually, we will all need to own our stories and embrace them. Then, learn
to sit and listen without judgment. We can work on our magnificent and bold
finale.
